What is Reiki?

January 13, 2018

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. Often referred to as an alternative and holistic health service it is a simple, natural and safe method that everyone can use. It is administered by a Reiki Master who places their hands lightly on or just above the energy centers (or chakras) of the body.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's wisdom or Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force'', combined it is 'spiritually guided life force energy.' Reiki is based on the idea that this unseen life force energy flows through us and is what allows us to be alive. It aids the body in releasing stress and tension by creating deep relaxation; restoring energy balance and vitality by relieving the physical and emotional effects of unreleased stress. It gently and effectively opens blocked meridians (energy pathways) and chakras (energy centres) and clears the energy bodies, leaving you feeling relaxed and at peace.

Reiki is simple and provides measurable results, it aligns the body’s energy system, which in turn releases pain on all levels – physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.- in essence, it is power, light and love.

A complete Reiki session is 60 to 90 minutes and offered to a fully clothed recipient who is lying on a treatment table or sitting comfortably supported in a chair. A Reiki practitioner directs and offers universal energy

from a subject’s head to toes with specific traditional hand positions and mantras.

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. There is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. However, it is still important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended the practice of certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony.

Traditional Reiki Principles:

Just for today, let go of anger

Just for today, let go of worry

Just for today, honour your parents, teachers and elders

Just for today, earn your living honestly

Just for today, show gratitude to every living thing
